About SBMC Basketball – Where Passion Meets Teamwork

Building Skills, Confidence & Community Through Basketball
The South Burnaby Metro Club Basketball Program welcomes boys and girls ages 5 to 18 into an inclusive and dynamic environment where learning, growth, and community come first. Whether your child is taking their first shot or preparing for high school-level play, SBMC offers a structured pathway that nurtures athletic development, personal confidence, and strong team values.
Our basketball program runs in multiple sessions throughout the year—typically fall/winter and spring—and includes a mix of skill-building clinics, recreational leagues, and competitive gameplay. Each age group is coached using developmentally appropriate methods designed to encourage progress at every stage:
-
Ages 7 (Introductory/Minis): Focused on fun, coordination, and early skill development through games and drills.
-
Ages 8–11 (Junior): Expands on basic skills, introduces structured team play, and emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship.
-
Ages 12–14 (Intermediate): Builds on tactical understanding of the game, teamwork, and performance in real-game scenarios.
-
Ages 15–18 (Senior): Prepares players for more competitive play with advanced coaching, conditioning, and leadership opportunities.
Each season includes practices, inter-team or inter-club games, and end-of-season celebrations or tournaments. Coaches are trained volunteers, many of whom are parents or former players who are passionate about giving back to the community. All volunteers are guided by the Club’s values of respect, inclusion, and development, and many participate in coaching clinics to ensure they are delivering high-quality experiences.
What sets SBMC Basketball apart is our focus on character and community. Players learn more than how to pass or shoot—they learn how to work as a team, show resilience in the face of a challenge, and respect their coaches, officials, and opponents. Many of our youth also return as teen referees or junior coaches, giving back and helping to build leadership skills.
Parents play a vital role in this journey. From cheering on the sidelines to helping manage teams or volunteering on the court, your involvement makes a difference. SBMC is more than just a sports program—it’s a community built on shared values, lasting friendships, and a commitment to creating positive opportunities for Burnaby’s youth.
With roots dating back to 1952, and guided by our enduring motto, “Dedicated to Youth,” South Burnaby Metro Club Basketball continues to shape young athletes into confident, capable, and community-minded individuals.
Join us on the court—where every child has a place to play, grow, and thrive.
